Writing Prompts to Feed Your Imagination

We've been having a lot of fun in the Southern Christian Writers Conference Facebook group lately, and have been encouraging each other to write more during this time of quarantine due to the coronavirus.

(If you're not a member of the SCWC Facebook group, you should go join it now. HERE is the link to the group.)

Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, I post writing prompts to jumpstart the writing process. They may motivate you to write a poem, or start a short story, or reminisce about the past. I've enjoyed hearing from SCWC members who've used the prompts to write during this time.

Here are some of the prompts that have been posted in our group. Maybe you can use one (or more) of them to spur your imagination.

Write a scene of dialogue that involves one character confessing to another character.

Write a scene from a child's point of view. How is the child's perspective different than an adult's?

Write a short reflection on one of your favorite places in nature.

Write a haiku.

Write a story from the perspective of your pet, thrilled (or not so thrilled) that you’re spending more time at home.

Listen to a "church" song that has special meaning for you. It can be an old hymn, or a worship song, or maybe even something you've sung with your children. Free write based on that song (a devotion, a poem, a short story, an essay; it's up to you).

Write a letter to your 16-year-old self. What would you like him/her to know?

Write a worst case poem ("What’s the worst that could happen?") OR a best case poem (take the worst and reverse it!).

Write a scene set in a quarantine.

Start a scene with the stereotypical opening line, “It was a dark and stormy night,” but see where the story can take you.

Write an acrostic poem (a poem in which the first letter of each line spells out a word).

Take a familiar Bible story and turn it on its head. Write a scene from the perspective of a minor character (a woman arriving at the tomb on Easter morning, the boy who gave the fish and loaves to the crowd, etc.).

Find the 10th photo saved on your cell phone, and free write based on it.

Good luck...and happy writing!
